Five Things You Need to Know that Can Ruin Your Camping Trip Besides Rain

Rain can ruin many camping trips, but seriously, our forefathers lived through all sorts of rain storms while out hunting for days, or traveling between one area and another, or even while they had gone into a new area as a settler, before they could complete their home. Rain is essential, and it shouldn’t be something you let ruin your camping trip.

Here are five things that can seriously ruin your camping or hunting trip that are difficult to plan for adequately. These things might not make you pack up and go home, but they can surely make your expedition a horrible memory.

1. Bugs. Bugs, besides mosquitoes, can become bothersome, to say the least. While you can put on bug spray to keep them off you and the kids, you can’t do the same thing with what you’re cooking. Nobody wants to eat soup with the proverbial fly, but having a bee in it can be downright dangerous. If you’re cooking beans and it gets dark, it’s difficult to tell what’s a bean, and what’s a bee. You should know that bees do like food, especially food that is high in liquid or starches and sugars, like pork and beans.

2. Other People. You can only control what you do, or don’t do, no matter how much influence you might have on others. Other people can seriously infringe on your enjoyment during your camping and hunting trips. People who can cause you to have a less-than-enjoyable time can be anyone, including your boss who wants you to come in to show him where you report is, even though you left it on his desk, the one kid who decided to have a vomiting attack in your sleeping bag, or the neighboring campers who decided to bring their domestic violence with them. If you’re hunting, you probably know all too well that others hunters can be dangerous to you, and that is why you always wear bright orange from head to toe.

3. Illness Strikes. Getting sick during a trip can be detrimental to having fun, and if it’s contagious and not of the allergy-type, where only one person is affected, it can really make things unbearable for everyone, even those who don’t get sick. When it’s the 24 hours flu, or food-borne, it can affect everyone in your camping or hunting party rather quickly. Not only can being sick be a horrible thing, but cleaning up later can ruin another day for you.

4. Heat Waves. Heat waves are common in the United States, and can make things unbearable when living at home with fans and air conditioning units. If you’re camping and a heat wave rolls in, the sticky ickies of camping can turn nasty. A bit of grime is expected, but to have that combined with extreme heat is sure to make even the most tolerant person cranky. Towels that have been saturated in water and then draped over your shoulders or swimming in the lake can take a lot of the heat out of your day, though.

5. Broken Gear. It doesn’t matter how it’s broken, and things do break, but if you aren’t able to fix it so that it lasts the rest of your stay, you may be looking at a ruined trip. Tent poles, broken tent door zippers, and a few other things can be prepared for and remedied with repair kits and a pair of pliers, but if a raccoon family has decided that the goodies stored inside the tent with you are delectable enough, they can get through the fabric your tent is made out of quite easily. Gear left outside can also be a source of raccoon investigations during the night, and sometimes, you’ll discover things aren’t broken, but stolen outright.

This isn’t to say that you won’t have fantastic trip each time you venture out, but it should serve as encouragement to go again when something does go wrong.

Not every trip is going to be the same, and each time is its own adventure. Pack well, and enjoy as much, and as often, as you can.
